Day 2 – From the Blue Coast to the ruins of Ziba
After our first night in Sidi Bou Said We wake up to a view of the white and blue of perhaps Tunisia's most famous coastal town. The hustle and bustle of Tunis already seems far away here. Today our journey south truly begins. And although the Star Wars locations are still a little while away, this will be a day where film history, Tunisian antiquity, and the first real off-road adventure alternate in rapid succession.
First, back in time: Carthage
We start off slowly. From Sidi Bou Said, it is only a short drive to Carthage, once one of the most powerful cities of the Mediterranean. We don't want to set aside half a day here for all the archaeological sites – there is simply too much to see – but if you are practically driving past, you naturally cannot skip Carthage.
We are therefore making a short stop to take in something of this special place. Here, Carthage and Rome fought for power over the Mediterranean, and here the downfall of the Carthaginian empire ultimately began. It is remarkable to think that today we are driving our SUV through a modern suburb of Tunis, while beneath and between the houses lie the remains of a civilization thousands of years old.
But we still have a long drive ahead of us. Time to leave the coast behind.
From asphalt to adventure
The further we drive, the more the landscape changes. The buildings become fewer, the roads emptier, and the surroundings wilder. And then comes the moment we have secretly been looking forward to a little: We are leaving the asphalt.
The route towards Ziba It is exactly the kind of road we want to take this trip with SUVs for. Not a dead-straight main tourist route, but a beautiful stretch through the Tunisian landscape. Stones, sand, potholes, and narrow passages ensure that the speed drops, but the smile only gets bigger.
This is where the feeling of a real self-drive expedition begins.
The car makes its way along the unpaved track while the hills rise around us. Every now and then, we simply stop for a moment. Not because we have to, but because the view calls for it. No tour buses, no rows of souvenir shops. Just us, our car, and the Tunisian landscape.
And somewhere above us lies our next goal.
Ziba Haute
The old Berber settlement Ziba Haute It lies spectacularly against and between the rocks. As soon as we get out, we understand why this place is so special. The abandoned stone houses seem to almost grow out of the mountain itself.
We walk through the ruins, along narrow paths and past crumbling walls. In some places, only facades and arches remain standing. Elsewhere, you can still clearly see how the houses were once built against one another. And time and again, there is that view of the surrounding mountain landscape.
This is not a film set.
This is the scenery.
Zriba is exactly the kind of place that shows that this trip will be much more than just a tour of film locations. Of course, we are here for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Life of Brian. But Tunisia itself already has thousands of years of stories waiting.
On to Sousse and Monastir
After Ziba, we set course for the coast. The landscape gradually flattens out, and eventually the Mediterranean Sea comes into view again.
Our destination for tonight is the area of Sousse en Monastir. And with that, we return to the film theme.
For long before we drive around here in our SUV, a certain Brian walked around here.
Parts of Monty Python's Life of Brian They were actually filmed in Tunisia. The historic buildings of Monastir, in particular, formed a fantastic backdrop for the Jerusalem from the film. Anyone familiar with the film will recognize various locations here where the now-legendary scenes were filmed.
And the best part?
We are staying right in the middle of that historic atmosphere tonight. Not an anonymous hotel along the highway, but an overnight stay at a place directly connected to the filming locations of Life of Brian.
So, after Carthage, a spectacular off-road ride, and the abandoned ruins of Zriba, we end the day amidst film history.

And then another world-famous film is on the program.
Indiana Jones is waiting for us in Kairouan.
Dag 2 – Van de blauwe kust naar de ruïnes van Zriba
Na onze eerste nacht in Sidi Bou Saïd worden we wakker tussen het wit en blauw van misschien wel het beroemdste kustplaatsje van Tunesië. De chaos van Tunis lijkt alweer een wereld van ons verwijderd. Vandaag begint onze reis naar het zuiden pas echt. En hoewel we voor de eerste echte Star Wars-locaties nog even geduld moeten hebben, wordt dit een dag waarop filmgeschiedenis, het eeuwenoude Tunesië en ons eerste echte offroad-avontuur elkaar in rap tempo afwisselen.
Eerst even terug in de tijd: Carthago
We beginnen de dag rustig. Vanuit Sidi Bou Saïd is het maar een klein stukje rijden naar Carthago, ooit een van de machtigste steden rond de Middellandse Zee.
We zijn niet van plan om een halve dag uit te trekken om alle archeologische vindplaatsen te bekijken – daarvoor is er simpelweg te veel te zien – maar als je er zó dichtbij bent, kun je Carthago natuurlijk niet zomaar overslaan.
Dus maken we een korte stop om iets van deze bijzondere plek mee te krijgen. Carthago en Rome vochten ooit om de heerschappij over de Middellandse Zee, een strijd die uiteindelijk leidde tot de ondergang van het Carthaagse Rijk. Het is vreemd om te bedenken dat we vandaag met onze SUV door wat bijna een moderne buitenwijk van Tunis lijkt te zijn rijden, terwijl overal om ons heen – en onder ons – de overblijfselen liggen van een beschaving die duizenden jaren oud is.
Maar we hebben nog een behoorlijke rit voor de boeg.
Tijd om de kust achter ons te laten.
Van asfalt naar avontuur
Hoe verder we rijden, hoe meer het landschap begint te veranderen. De bebouwing wordt schaarser, de wegen rustiger en het landschap steeds ruiger.
En dan komt het moment waar we stiekem al een tijdje naar uitkijken:
We laten het asfalt achter ons.
De route richting Zriba is precies het soort weg waarvoor we deze reis met SUV's wilden maken. Geen kaarsrechte toeristische hoofdweg, maar een prachtige route dwars door het Tunesische landschap. Rotsen, zand, kuilen en smalle stukken dwingen ons om het tempo te verlagen – maar zorgen er tegelijkertijd voor dat de glimlach op ons gezicht alleen maar groter wordt.
Hier begint het voor het eerst echt als een selfdrive-expeditie te voelen.
De auto zoekt zijn weg over het ruwe pad terwijl de heuvels om ons heen oprijzen. Af en toe stoppen we even. Niet omdat het moet, maar simpelweg omdat het uitzicht erom vraagt.
Geen touringcars. Geen rijen souvenirwinkeltjes.
Alleen wij, onze auto's en het Tunesische landschap.
En ergens boven ons ligt onze volgende bestemming.
Zriba Haute
Het oude Berberdorp Zriba Haute ligt spectaculair verscholen tussen de rotsen. Zodra we uit de auto's stappen, begrijpen we waarom deze plek zo bijzonder is. De verlaten stenen huizen lijken bijna uit de berg zelf te groeien.
We lopen door de ruïnes, over smalle paadjes en langs afbrokkelende muren. Op sommige plekken staan alleen nog gevels en bogen overeind. Elders kun je nog goed zien hoe de huizen ooit dicht tegen elkaar aan werden gebouwd.
En waar je ook kijkt, je hebt een fantastisch uitzicht over de omliggende bergen.
Dit is geen filmset.
Dit is het decor.
Zriba is precies zo'n plek die bewijst dat deze reis om veel meer draait dan alleen het bezoeken van beroemde filmlocaties. Natuurlijk zijn we hier voor Star Wars, Indiana Jones en Life of Brian. Maar Tunesië heeft duizenden jaren aan eigen verhalen die minstens zo bijzonder zijn om te ontdekken.
Verder naar Sousse en Monastir
Na Zriba zetten we weer koers richting de kust. Het landschap wordt langzaam vlakker en uiteindelijk verschijnt de Middellandse Zee opnieuw aan de horizon.
Onze bestemming voor vanavond is de regio Sousse en Monastir.
En dat betekent dat het tijd wordt om terug te keren naar ons filmthema.
Want lang voordat wij hier met onze SUV's rondreden, liep hier een zekere Brian rond.
Delen van Monty Python's Life of Brian werden opgenomen in Tunesië, waarbij de historische gebouwen van Monastir in de film het spectaculaire decor vormden voor Jeruzalem. Liefhebbers van de film zullen verschillende locaties herkennen die werden gebruikt voor scènes die inmiddels tot de klassiekers uit de filmkomedie behoren.
En het mooiste?
Vanavond overnachten we midden in die historische sfeer, vlak bij de locaties die zo'n belangrijke rol speelden in Life of Brian.
Na Carthago, een spectaculaire offroadrit en de verlaten ruïnes van Zriba eindigen we de dag dus opnieuw midden in de filmgeschiedenis.
Morgen gaat de reis verder.
En dan staat er alweer een andere legendarische film op ons te wachten.
